Our Leafy Studio!

March 4, 2015 • After School Workshop

Last week was a particularly special one, as several of our favorite things happened: we had a visiting artist, we worked on messy projects PLUS we made the studio a little bit more magical!

We were fortunate enough to have Set Designer Kristin Abhalter visit and work with us on a big and ambitious project: putting a tree in the studio. Not a real one, of course – although it is certainly as big as one. Kristin looked carefully at all of our tree paintings and drawings from the week before and cleverly came up with a design that incorporated a little bit of all of them. Together we reproduced the design on one of the studio walls (yes, we actually painted the walls) and it was as even more fun than it sounds.

Kristin patiently took us through the process of scenic painting step by step….

…. taught us all sorts of techniques and tricks of the trade AND let us use her special big brushes!

Thats not all – we also worked on Big Project Number 2: Decoupaging the folding screen with leaves to use for our plays. From the french word découpe, meaning to cut out, decoupage is essentially cutting and pasting – both of which we are already masters at, so it was a cinch. What made it more of a challenge, was making ten thousand leaves to découpe! We got imaginative (and messy) by making our own leaf textures with finger paints and finding interesting paper to cut into leaves.

Here are the results – now all we need to do is get performing! Don’t they look amazing?

Thanks Kristin!

Due to their hard work and diligence in all areas tree related, we crowned Solomon and Evelyn on the LOG OF GLORY – thank you both!
