Sewing with Amy Struckmeyer

August 22, 2016 • After School Workshop

Sewing camp has been a wonderful theme to host in the Studio. Aimed at an older group of kids than our morning sessions, Amy Struckmeyer has been teaching campers to sew cushions, stuffed animals, bags and small quilts. Starting with the basics, we began with hand sewing, making animals and creatures of their own design. The kids drew their creations on paper and then figured out how to make them into functional patterns.

Next we learned how to sew on a machine. We practiced on paper with a connect the dots exercise, and once we had the hang of it, everyone made their own drawstring backpack.

The last lesson was about how to create patchworks, allowing the students to make small blankets or scarves. This class has been an amazing experience for the kids to work with their hands to create practical items. It has been a treat to have Ms. Amy in the Studio teaching students principles both of design and making!

Ms Amy’s work can be found on Instagram and on her blog.
